A Blank Page, A Fresh Start

The start of the new year is one of my favorite times.

Photography resolutions

It is like the first breath of spring or walking into a really clean kitchen.  It’s a fresh start, a time to reflect on the past year and make a plan to accomplish your goals in the new year.

I have spent quite a bit of time reflecting on 2013 and dreaming about 2014.   Writing goals and resolutions is a hard thing for me.  It is easy to get carried away and want to change everything all at once, which of course causes me to become overwhelmed and give up, usually before January 15th.

I really want to push myself this year, both personally and professionally.  I want to move out of my comfort zone, do more, learn more, see more.  I want to spend more time “unplugged” with my family and soak up every single  giggle, laugh, and even the messes.  I want to take more family snapshots and not worry about them being technically perfect.  I want to live more and plan less (pretty hard for a type A person like myself!)

So here are my 2014 New Year’s Resolutions.  Waste Less.  Spend More.

Waste Less

Waste less energy trying to do things perfectly.  Just get started and do the best you can.

Waste less time worrying about the thoughts and actions of other people.  I can’t control them, so let them go.

Waste less space in my mind with things that don’t inspire me, encourage me, help me grow, or benefit me in some other way.

Waste less  time worrying about yesterday or fretting about tomorrow.  Be present in today

Spend More

Spend more time creating memories with my family.

Spend more time reading and learning about new things

Spend more time learning how to knit, crochet, and sew.  Expand my creativity beyond photographs.

Spend more time unplugged, enjoying what is happening right in front of me.

Spend more energy documenting my family life.  Take more photos, edit them and print them.  On a regular basis.
