Monthly Blog Circle | Shooting Through Glass

It’s that time again! The monthly blog circle. Yay! This months topic was “shooting through glass”. In the beginning of the month I thought I would take pictures of people through windows. I took pictures of my daughters sleeping in their carseats through the rearview mirror and through the car windows. I had plans to take photos of my husband reading books to the kids while I stood outside. Halfway through the month, I had a different idea.

Often times, you will hear photographers talking about their glass. They are referring to their lenses they use on their cameras. There are two lenses (well, okay, let me rephrase that. Two of the lenses…) I want to add to my collection to feed my creative side are a tilt shift lens and a macro lens. In the meantime, I have decided to see what I can do with the glass I have.

Freelensing is a technique used to change your regular lens into a tilt shift lens. Basically, what is consists of is taking the lens off your camera and holding it in place, slightly tilting the lens to get the tilt shift effect. So, I decided to give it a try! The second technique I tried was to flip my lens around and hold it against the camera turning it into a macro lens.

So, before you see the images from these attempts, I have to let you know. I failed. They are not all in focus. They are not all perfectly composed or show stopping images. But they were fun. I enjoyed trying something new. I loved attempting a new technique and seeing what would come out of it. I am less than excited to put my these images out here on the world wide interweb for everyone to see. Who wants to post something less than their best? However, these were my attempts. And I am always learning and trying to improve my craft. And it is important to document the journey.

I actually liked most of the ones that were very out of focus, intriguing to try to figure out what the object was! What a creative take on this month’s challenge!

I love your interpretation and your adventurous spirit in putting your efforts out there. Even though they aren’t technically perfect, they are loads of fun! Isn’t that what it’s essentially all about?

Nice try andrea! I daresay I would not fair much better, but thank you for sharing and I will attempt to try these methods. thank you for pushing yourself and showing your images, failure or not! btw, I love the image of the giraffe full body view! adorable =).

I love the last shot. I have never heard of doing this before. It sounds like something I need to try! I think the exercise of doing things like this is what makes people better photographers. Way to go!

Totally original take on our challenge. Thanks for sharing it—and for the flashback to my boys’ Sophie the giraffe! Best teething toy ever.
