Location Guide: Retzer Nature Center

Introduction

If you are dreaming of nature-filled sessions with iconic tree lines, winding trails, and some of the dreamiest golden light around, then Retzer Nature Center would be a beautiful choice!

With a mix of trees, tall grasses, and thoughtfully designed paths, this location offers a peaceful, organic feel that photographs effortlessly.

The Best Time of Day For Photos

Not many locations can compete with the glowing, warm light you’ll find at Retzer Nature Center!  Evenings are the absolute best time for your session here.

As the sun begins to set, the light filters through the trees in the most magical way, creating a soft, golden glow that makes your images feel cozy, natural and full of life!

That said, if you need an earlier start time, Retzer still works beautifully!  The abundance of trees provides plenty of shade, allowing us to sneak your session in a little earlier than what is typically ideal.  Win-Win!

The Beauty of a Nature Preserve

According to their website, Retzer Nature Center has over 450 acres of restored land, including prairies, wetlands, woodlands, trails, gardens, and wildlife.  It is a wonderful initiative that over 25,000 people enjoy per year!

To help maintain the beauty of the park, all guests are asked to stay on marked trails and not to venture into protected natural areas.  It’s a simple guideline that helps keep this location beautiful and accessible for everyone (and ensures we can keep coming back for photos!)

Because of these conservation efforts, dogs are not allowed at the park.  If including your pet is important to you, I’m happy to suggest other locations that would be a better fit.

Accessibility at Retzer Nature Center

Retzer has made some wonderful updates in recent years, including adding boardwalk-style paths that are great for strollers and wheelchairs—and they’re beautiful, too!

That said, getting to some of these paths can still involve a bit of uneven terrain. While I wouldn’t consider the park fully accessible for everyone, many of my favorite photo spots are located very close to the parking area and require minimal walking.

If mobility is a concern, we can absolutely talk through whether this location is the right fit or explore other options that might feel more comfortable.
